Frightful Things to Eat! : Carnival of the Recipes

These are a few of my favorite fun recipes for halloween. I have quite a few that I have used for dirty Fila and her friends and classmates throughout the years, many, many times. These are a few of my favorites. This year I plan to do these with the Kitty Litter Cake for my coworkers. My recipe for the Kitty Litter cake.

Skeletal Hands

Supplies:
A box of sterile medical gloves
Popcorn
Candy corn

Place 1 candycorn in the finger of each glove to be the fingernail. Fill glove with popcorn. Tie off end of glove with ribbon or string.
Place Sleketal hands on tray complete with spiderwebs and spiders!

Creepy Witches' Fingers

I first saw this recipe several years ago on the Martha Stewart website, but I think they were pretzles. Since that time I have seen this recipe around lots of places! Very effective!

Yield: 5 dozen

1 cup Butter, softened
1 cup Icing sugar
1 Egg
1 tsp Almond extract
1 tsp Vanilla
2 2/3 cups Flour
1 tsp Baking powder
1 tsp Salt
3/4 cup Almonds, whole blanched
1 Tube red decorator gel
(optional, not pictured)

Gross everyone out with these creepy cookies.
In bowl, beat together butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla. Beat in flour, baking soda, and salt. Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes. Working with one quarter of the dough at a time and keeping remainder refrigerated, roll heaping teaspoonful of dough into finger shape for each cookie. Press almond firmly into 1 end for nail. Squeeze in centre to create knuckle shape. (Accompanying picture showed long rolled shape with bulge at centre for knuckle; you puff it out rather than squeeze it in.) Using paring knife, make slashes in several places to form knuckle.

Place on lightly greased baking sheets; bake in 325F (160C) oven for 20-25 minutes or until pale golden. Let cool for 3 minutes. Lift up almond, squeeze red decorator gel onto nail bed and press almond back in place, so gel oozes out from underneath. You can also make slashes in the finger and fill them with "blood."

Remove from baking sheets and let cool on racks. Repeat with remaining dough.

Glass of Slime

Ingredients:
3-3oz boxes of Jello gelatin
1 orange
1 lime
1 grape

Soda of your choosing: orange, grape or lemon lime
Straws

In three different containers, mix up each flavor of jello according to the directions. Chill until set. Stir up with fork to break jello into globs. Spoon jello into clear glasses, one color at a time, making three layers. Fill glasses about 3/4 full as you need to make room for the soda. Pour soda over jello until full. Have fun slurping your slime with your straw! The kids will love it!
