Halloween and Cats: Carnival of Cats

Here is my baby, mugging for the camera. On the morning news on Fridays they have a "pet of the week" segment to get stray cats and dogs adopted at the local shelters were I am. They made the annoucement on friday-which has been the same every october--no adoptions of black cats during october. This is in fear of people torturing black cats due to the "satanic" pagan celebration of halloween. I will have to make sure there are no escapes out the back door. Here are some things to consider with the holiday growing near.

Halloween Safety for your Pet
  • Leaving your pets outside on Halloween is not a good idea. There are plenty of tales of malicious people who tease, injure, steal, torture, even killed peoples pets on Halloween. Keep your cats or dogs inside for the night if you don't already do it.
  • As much as your dog or cat may beg for some of your Halloween candy, always remember that chocolate is deadly to them in any amount.
  • If you work in a pet store, remember that this is the time of year that can be deadly for black cats. Some sick people who play at being what they'll call a Satanist will buy them to "sacrifice" If you can, don't take any black cats or sell them during October.
  • The wrappers, such as tin foil, can get stuck in your pets digestive tract and make them ill or cause death. There are plenty of recipes for making home made dog and cat treats, you can always make them on a Halloween note.
  • Dogs can have lethal tails, wagging all over the place. Don't leave any lighted candles or Jack-O-Lanterns where they could be knocked over by a swinging tail or by a curious cat. Not only could your pet start a fire but they could severely burn themselves in the process.
  • If you are going to dress your pet in a costume, keep in mind that unless the dog or cat is extremely receptive to this kind of thing, you could be causing it discomfort and stress. Some animals don't mind at all but others do not want to be bothered with this kind of thing. They'll be under enough stress with the festivities going on outside and people at the door constantly so don't cause them any more nervousness then you have to. You may love to dress in costume but then, you aren't a dog or a cat.
  • If you put a mask of some type on your animal, make sure that the eye holes are big enough for them to see peripherally. Animals depend on their vision to let them know what's going on and even the nicest dog can get snippy if he can't see what's around him. In fact, masks really aren't a good idea.
  • If you are having a indoor party, make sure that you put your dog or cat in a room where they won't be disturbed. Unless your pet is ultra friendly and doesn't mind loud noises, music and lots of people you should keep them separate for the night. Also, be careful your cat or dog doesn't dart out through the open door as you hand out candy. Best bet is to just put them in a room with some food and water for the night and check on them once in a while to let them know everything is fine.

In keeping with the spirit of the season, only my kitty would come up with the following recipe. After a long day , sleeping at the foot of my bed, she banged this recipe out in about 15 minutes. Pretty good for a halloween black cat, I must say. Just don't let her cross your path.

Kitty Litter Cake

1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 white cake mix
2 large pkg vanilla instant pudding mix, prepared (I like Bird's® dessert mix)
1 large pkg vanilla sandwich cookies
green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls®

1 new kitty litter pan
1 new plastic kitty litter pan liner
1 new pooper scooper

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans).

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Important: mix in just enough of the pudding to moisten it. You don't want it too soggy. Combine gently.

Line a new, clean kitty litter box. Put the cake/pudding/cookie mixture into the litter box.

Put three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls bury them in the mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly on top of everything -- this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat 3 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top; take one and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs. Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around for a truly disgusting effect!

Happy Haunting!

What I do is kick them in the pants with a diamond buckled shoe!

laurence i will have to join you in that guilt. i have done the christmas kitty antlers on my cat that have the hangin bell on one ear. it makes her crazy...she runs around crazy for about 30 minutes. when she realizes she cannot get it off herself she finally calms down. i have not subjected her to the antlers for about 4 years.

Thanks for the advise on black cats. I have two black cats (well they do have some white on them, but if you look at them at certain angles they look totally black) and I have thought about the upcoming Halloween holiday. Please everyone keep your cats in, especially at night and watch out for those black kitties!
